How to Forward Your Own Domain to Your Page
You don’t need a domain to run your page. The link hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname is all it takes. But if you already own a domain, you can put it to work: print it on a business card, say it in a video or add it to your bio, and anyone who opens it lands on your page.
This is called domain forwarding. You set it up where you bought the domain, it takes a few minutes, and there’s nothing to do on our side.
What forwarding does and doesn’t do
Section titled “What forwarding does and doesn’t do”When someone opens yourdomain.com, their browser is sent on to hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname. That’s the whole trick.
- Your page lives on
hobenakicoffee.com. Your domain only sends people there. The page isn’t served from your domain. - The address bar shows
hobenakicoffee.com. Once the forward happens, the address changes and your domain is no longer shown. - Sign-in and payment happen on
hobenakicoffee.com. You can tell your supporters: if that’s the address in the bar when you pay, you’re in the right place. - We don’t store your domain anywhere. The whole setting lives in your domain’s dashboard. That’s where you change it or switch it off.
Four things to know before you start
Section titled “Four things to know before you start”1. Forward a subdomain or the whole domain, whichever is free. If the domain already has a website on it, forward a subdomain such as shop.yourdomain.com. If the domain is sitting unused, you can forward all of it (yourdomain.com).
2. Pick a temporary (302) redirect, not a permanent (301) one. Browsers remember a 301 for a long time. If you change your username later, anyone who has opened your domain before would keep being sent to the old link. A 302 doesn’t have that problem.
3. Turn path forwarding on. Then yourdomain.com/shop opens hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname/shop, which is your shop. With it off, every link lands on the front of your page, whatever comes after the domain.
4. Change the forwarding when you change your username. It doesn’t update on its own. Right after a username change, go to your domain’s dashboard and put the new link in.
The link to forward to is https://hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname, with your own username in place of yourname. Don’t add a language parameter or an extra path. Put a / or anything else on the end only where a company’s steps below tell you to.
The steps at any domain company
Section titled “The steps at any domain company”Every dashboard looks different, but the steps are much the same.
- Sign in where you bought the domain and open the domain’s settings.
- Look for an option called
Forwarding,URL RedirectorRedirect. It’s usually inside the DNS settings. - Choose what to forward: the whole domain or a subdomain.
- In the destination box, enter
https://hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname. - Set the redirect type to
Temporaryor302. - If there’s a path forwarding option, turn it on.
- Don’t pick
MaskingorFrame. It opens the page inside a frame, and many sites don’t work that way. - Save. After a short wait, open your domain, then try a path as well, such as
yourdomain.com/shop.
Below are the steps for three popular companies, written from each company’s own help pages. Button and field names are shown the way the dashboard shows them.
Namecheap
Section titled “Namecheap”- Sign in and click
Managenext to your domain. - Open the
Advanced DNStab, then clickAdd New Record. - Set
TypetoURL Redirect Record. - In
Host, enter@for the whole domain, or the subdomain’s name (such asshop). - In
Value, enterhttps://hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname/. Keep the/at the end. - Leave the redirect type on
Unmasked, then save.
At Namecheap, Unmasked is the 302. Don’t pick Permanent (301) or Masked.
Namecheap has no separate switch for path forwarding. The path is carried over only when the link ends with /. Without it, every link lands on the front of your page. That rule comes from an older Namecheap help page, so after saving, open yourdomain.com/shop once to check it.
If the same Host already has another record (A, CNAME, ALIAS or another URL Redirect), remove it, or the forward won’t work. It can take up to 30 minutes to start working.
GoDaddy
Section titled “GoDaddy”- Sign in to your
Domain Portfolioand select the domain. - Open the
DNStab, selectForwarding, thenAdd Forwarding. - Choose
Domainfor the whole domain, orSubdomainand type its name. - Choose
https://for the start of the link, then enterhobenakicoffee.com/@yourname. - Set the forwarding type to
Temporary (302), then selectSave.
Don’t pick Permanent (301) or Forward with masking.
GoDaddy has no setting for path forwarding, and its help page doesn’t say whether the path is carried over. So after saving, open yourdomain.com/shop. If your shop opens, you’re set. If it lands on the front of your page, you have two ways to go: use your domain only as the address of your page and share products or posts with the full hobenakicoffee.com link, or move the domain’s DNS to Cloudflare and forward it with the steps below.
When you forward the whole domain, GoDaddy updates and locks the domain’s @ A record for you. If you want www to work too, point the www CNAME record to @. Most changes work within an hour, but they can take up to 48 hours.
Cloudflare
Section titled “Cloudflare”These steps work when the domain’s DNS is on Cloudflare. Redirect rules are included in the free plan.
- Open the domain in the Cloudflare dashboard and go to the
Overviewpage underRules. - Select
Create rule, thenRedirect Rule. Give the rule a name. - Under
When incoming requests match, chooseWildcard pattern. - In
Request URL, enterhttp*://shop.yourdomain.com/*. For the whole domain, usehttp*://yourdomain.com/*. - In
Target URL, enterhttps://hobenakicoffee.com/@yourname/${2}. - Set
Status codeto302. If you leave it alone, it stays on 301. - Turn on
Preserve query string, then selectDeploy.
Here ${2} does the job of path forwarding. Whatever path the * at the end of Request URL matches, ${2} puts it on the end of the new link.
The name you’re forwarding (such as shop) needs a DNS record, and that record has to be set to Proxied. Otherwise the rule won’t run. If there isn’t one, the dashboard may offer to create it.
If you change your username later
Section titled “If you change your username later”Go back to the dashboard and swap the old link for the new one: https://hobenakicoffee.com/@newname. Keep the / at the end at Namecheap and the ${2} at Cloudflare. If you picked a 302, the change starts working quickly.
