How to Start a Creator Membership
A practical guide to launching a monthly membership as a Bangladeshi creator: what to offer, how to price it, what happens at renewal and when a payment fails, and how to keep members, with worked numbers.
Coffee gifts can have a great month followed by an empty one. A video takes off, the tips roll in, then three quiet weeks. A membership smooths that out. With 60 members paying ৳199 a month, you know on the 1st that roughly ৳12,000 is coming, and you can plan next month’s content around it.
But a membership also asks more of you than tips do. A tip is a thank-you. A membership is a promise. Someone who pays every month expects something every month.
Is a membership right for you?
Not for everyone, and it’s worth admitting that up front.
A membership works when you make something on a schedule and a small slice of your audience is waiting for it. An investment writer publishing a weekly market breakdown, a cooking page posting a new recipe every week, a novelist releasing a serial, a teacher solving HSC questions every week: for them, a membership is a natural fit.
If you post once a month, don’t run one. By month two members will feel they’re paying more than they’re getting, and by month three they won’t renew. Coffee gifts or a single digital product are the more honest choice.
How memberships work here
A membership isn’t a separate thing you build from scratch. It switches on inside a service you already run. Right now that service is the newsletter: turn it on and a default plan (৳299/month) is created, and you can change its name, description and price. Courses, podcasts and other services are being built to plug into the same system.
For members the flow is short: pick a plan, pay once, get access straight away. A member can hold one active membership per service at a time, and can pause or cancel from their own account whenever they like.
A few rules behind the scenes protect your members’ trust:
- Prices are locked. If someone joins at ৳199 and you later raise the price to ৳299, they keep paying ৳199. New prices only apply to new members.
- Plans can’t vanish. You can’t accidentally delete a plan that still has active members.
- A failed payment doesn’t cut anyone off mid-month. The membership is marked past due, the member is reminded to fix their payment, and they keep access for the time they’ve already paid for.
Reminders: what goes out when
Surprise charges and silent cut-offs are the two fastest ways to lose members. So reminder emails go out on their own; you don’t lift a finger.

What to give members
The hardest question isn’t price. It’s this: what will members get that everyone else won’t?
Every newsletter post can be published three ways: free for everyone, members-only, or sold on its own as pay-per-post. You can combine the last two on the same post, so members read it free while everyone else can buy it. Readers can also gift a paid post to someone else, which is a natural way to bring new readers in.
A useful rule of thumb: free content is how people find you, and members’ content is why they stay. Lock everything and nobody new arrives. Lock nothing and nobody has a reason to join. Plenty of writers start with one free post and one members-only post a week, then watch which one readers lean towards.
A few concrete examples of what to keep for members:
- Investment writer: a weekly breakdown of what moved in each DSE sector; free readers get a monthly summary.
- Cooking page: full recipes with exact measurements for members; the videos stay free.
- Teacher: notes for one chapter every week, plus worked solutions to model tests.
- Fiction writer: members read each new episode a week early.
How to price it
The examples on the memberships feature page are a good starting point: ৳199/month for exclusive posts, ৳499/month for premium content that bundles your best work with extras and behind-the-scenes, and ৳999/month for 1:1 access such as direct replies or coaching. Each service can carry its own price.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ final estimate puts per capita income for fiscal year 2024-25 at US$2,769. Most of your readers spend carefully, so start low. Because prices are locked for existing members, starting low carries little risk: your early members keep the original price, and once you can show more value you raise it for new members.
Run your own numbers:
Estimated net income per month
৳11,522.1
60 members × ৳199 = ৳11,940. After the current 3.5% platform fee (৳417.90), that’s ৳11,522.10. The pricing page always has the latest fee.
Launching, step by step
- 1
Log in and switch on the newsletter
Turn on the newsletter from Services on your dashboard and the default membership plan is created for you.
- 2
Make the plan your own
Give it a name that says what members get ('Weekly market breakdown', not just 'Premium'), list three or four specific things in the description, and set your price.
- 3
Have three posts ready before launch
Your first member shouldn't walk into an empty room. You can keep up to 50 drafts at a time.
- 4
Announce it once, properly
Explain why you're starting a membership, where the money goes, and that the free content isn't going anywhere.
- 5
Reply to every member in the first month
Thank each new member and ask what they'd like to read. One personal reply in their first week tells a member their money reached a person, not a machine.
Keeping members
If you bring in 20 new members a month and lose 20 old ones, your income stands still. Membership income really grows by holding on to the people you already have.
Announce a fixed schedule and keep to it; “every Thursday at 9pm” builds far more trust than an irregular “every now and then”. Your dashboard shows member counts and views per post, so give members more of whatever they read most. And before you raise your price, tell existing members theirs isn’t changing. It’s true, and it’s nice to hear.
FAQ
If I raise my price, do existing members pay more?
No. Every member keeps paying the price they joined at. New prices only apply to new members.
What happens if a member's payment fails?
The membership is marked past due and the member is reminded to fix their payment. They keep access through the time they've already paid for, so nobody is cut off mid-month.
Can members cancel any time?
Yes, there's no lock-in. Members can cancel or pause from their own account whenever they like.
What can I attach a membership to besides the newsletter?
Right now memberships run on the newsletter. Other services such as courses and podcasts are being built on the same system.
How much does the platform take from membership income?
Right now it's one flat 3.5% platform fee on every service, effective from 16 September 2026. Check the pricing page for the latest rate.
How member payments reach your bKash or bank is covered in the bKash and Nagad payments guide. For the other ways to earn alongside a membership, read the guide to creator income in Bangladesh. Full feature details: Memberships and Newsletter.
