Introduction
As a payments-driven platform, হবে নাকি Coffee? carries out identity verification (KYC) and suspicious-activity monitoring in line with the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012 and Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU)/Bangladesh Bank guidance. This notice explains why, what, and how.
Why KYC is required
We are not a bank or Mobile Financial Service (MFS) provider ourselves — all payments are processed through licensed gateways/providers (SSLCommerz, bKash, Nagad, etc.), who are themselves subject to Bangladesh Bank’s AML/CFT requirements. As a merchant-of-record, we verify creator identity so that:
- The real person is the one receiving funds.
- The same person can’t create multiple/fake accounts.
- Money laundering and fraudulent fund flows are reduced.
What we collect
Before a creator’s first withdrawal, we require:
- National ID (NID) number — old format (10 digits) or Smart NID (17 digits).
- Front and back photos of the NID.
- A selfie (for liveness/face matching).
Under the Personal Data Protection Ordinance (PDPO) 2025, NID and selfie data are treated as “restricted data” — we record your explicit consent and the time/IP of that consent at submission. Documents are stored in secured storage and accessed only for verification purposes.
Withdrawal gate
Wallet withdrawals are not possible without completed KYC verification — this is a hard technical gate, not just a policy statement. A verified badge appears on your profile once approved.
Monitored activity
We watch for the following and may investigate or hold funds where warranted:
- Unusual fund movement between accounts of the same person.
- Fake/self-directed gifts or support used to rapidly cycle wallet balances.
- Structuring — moving large sums via many small transactions in a short window.
- Attempts to submit fake or altered identity documents.
In such cases, we reserve the right to hold payouts or restrict the account — see details in our Terms (Payouts section).
Context on large transactions
Under Bangladesh Bank guidance, licensed institutions (banks, MFS providers) must file a Cash Transaction Report (CTR) with BFIU for deposits/withdrawals of BDT 10,00,000 or more in a single day. Our payment gateway partners (SSLCommerz, bKash, Nagad) fall under this requirement — we cooperate with them and supply the information their compliance processes request.
Cooperation with authorities
We will provide required information upon valid legal request from BFIU, Bangladesh Bank, or law enforcement.
Data retention
KYC documents and verification records are retained per our legal retention policy. See details in our Privacy Policy.
